Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary Alumnus and community leader to be honored at banquet
Pittsburgh, February 2, 2011 – Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary (RPTS) alumnus, the late Reverend Maurice Chauncey Doss, is to be awarded the Faithful Servant Award by RPTS on March 19, 2011, at 6:30 PM, at the Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA.
Rev. Doss served his community and the church with great vigor and vitality for many years. Pastor of Union Baptist Church in Swissvale for 25 years, Doss impacted many as a mentor and had a broad influence in the Pittsburgh region. Doss was recognized as one of the 50 Most Influential Black Men in Pittsburgh and received the Outstanding Ministers Award from the Allegheny Union Baptist Association in 2009. Rev. Doss was instrumental in establishing Reach Up Inc., a 501(C)3 organization which oversaw more than 30 separate ministry programs, including a community food bank, prison ministry, after-school programs, and community counseling services. Doss also served on many civic organizations including the Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board.
Rev. Doss is remembered as a mentor and passionate preacher during his time as a Master of Divinity student at RPTS. Rev. Andrew Cooper of Pittsburgh recalls Doss as a man of great wisdom regarding pastoral issues. Pastor Bruce Parnell of Stillwater, OK, was encouraged by Rev. Doss to “tell the story so as to show Jesus”.
Rev. Doss’ wife, Charlotte, will receive the award in honor of her husband, as RPTS faculty, alumni, and friends remember and celebrate the life of a man who chose to influence the community for the glory of God. Doss passed away on November 7, 2009, at the age of 58.
