Who are you?
My name is Matthew Fisher. I am 22 years old and my occupation is Pre-hospital EMS. I have been walking with Christ for four to five years now; the Lord has cultivated my faith in that short period of time, and like all Christians, this rebirth has been the most significant event in my existence. It should not be considered boasting or redundant to simply say, "I am a slave of Christ" who is young and very eager to learn, specifically in theological studies, but generally as well. I cannot multi-task very well and for this reason I do not have many hobbies. At the moment, my time is largely spent studying in either theology or some medical curriculum. Time spent with friends and family is important to me.
What are studying at RPTS?
I’m in the Masters of Theological Studies program, preparing for the ministry.
Why did you choose RPTS?
I was looking for a sola scriptura seminary which elevated Biblical truth in an academic format. My Christian upbringing was non-denominational with charismatic influences. Gradually, my theology became more reformed; despite my lack of knowledge in the reformed tradition, I eagerly anticipated studying at RPTS. Now, after one year of work, I can say my expectations have been satisfied.
What classes are you finding the most helpful for ministry work?
The Old Testament studies are very practical. The small classes allow for open discussion and analysis through every book of the Old Testament. The assignments are aimed for students to deepen their personal Bible study; this latitude leads to creative and intimate study of the Biblical text. I think that the courses offer a healthy balance in conjunction with the challenging curriculum. It provided time to enjoy and closely examine Biblical themes free from the demand of rigorous testing.
What can new students expect out of their time at RPTS?
Students at RPTS will learn how to properly interpret and apply Biblical truth, among a companionship of believers in a close community. Commonly overlooked, I have found that the relationships I have developed at RPTS are as valuable at the education itself. In addition to this, all of the faculty know every student and take a genuine interest in their lives.
What are your plans for the future?
I am not certain which ministry I will serve under in the next few years. Since the time I was first converted, I have had a passion for mission work. However, I do not know any foreign languages, and know very little about distant cultures, but I do feel as though I could serve the kingdom best in a domestic setting.
